Sunday July 24th - Off the Beaten Track

Another Glorious Summer Sunday

We assembled at Pont Abraham in brilliant sunshine and almost unbearable heat........

That was to have been the start of the report that I was tempted to write in advance.

The Reality

However, it was a very wet morning with no sign of change.
Nevertheless MX-5 owners' spirits were not dampened and we set off with 9 cars, including our newest members Audrey & Darryl, Glenys and Phillip.
Keeping away from major routes as much as possible, and with the hatches securely battened down (or should that be up?) we made our way to the coffee stop. The Gwili Steam Railway at Bronwydd Arms. http://www.gwili-railway.co.uk

Cold Drinks Anyone?

Pulling into the railway car park, and looking forward to a nice hot drink, we were informed that there was no water or electricity. Apparently, after an event last night, the buffet car had not been hooked up to the generator and water. All my plans were falling apart! The intention had been to arrive in time to see a steam train depart, have a wander around and a nice cup of tea. It was nearly back on course when the rain eased a little, the train chuffed out of the little station and Dafydd announced that tea was now being served in the buffet car.

Second Leg

Leaving Bronwydd behind we headed for Llanllwni and on to Brechfa, with fantastic views on a clear day. Unfortunately, as this was not a clear day, there wasn't much to see.
Seeking shelter in the Whitemill Inn, Whitemill, we were pleasantly surprised to see the weather lift and the skies clear. Until we had finished lunch when the heavens opened and we were treated to a short thunderstorm. The decision was made to abandon the last leg of the journey, a leisurely drive back to junction 47, and head to Carmarthen for people to make their own way home before the snow started!
Having waved goodbye at Pensarn roundabout the skies cleared again - oh well, such is life.
