Isn’t
it odd how things develop?
Earlier
in the year I asked Frank and Jane if they could recommend a place near their
home for us to visit to repay them for all their loyal £4.60’s spent on the
bridge coming over our way. Great they said “Leave it to us”. Well what a day!
The
day grew and grew into a tri-Area meeting between us, Western and Wessex areas.
We
met up at various points along the M4 until we had a total of 9 cars before
joining up with Frank and loads of other people at the Aust services. John and
Maureen turned up in their Suzuki jeep fresh from a campsite somewhere in the
countryside.
After
lots of chatting etc. it was off on the excellent route prepared by Frank and
Jane. I suggested I would lead our group of 10 cars rather than try to keep all
20 together, but as soon as we started to leave, loads of the others fell in
behind.
We
drove through some beautiful countryside on the way. I was a little
disappointed at Tockington because the elderly gentleman who I see often on my
way home from work who always waves to passing cars didn’t appear. I wondered
if something had happened to him until Jane contacted the Swann Inn in Tockington
to check up on him. The good news is that he’s alive and well and waving daily.
The
route continued on until we passed some odd road signs with pictures of sheep
having various notes on them including “get your passport ready”. The culprit
was later identified and can be seen below stuffing as much cake into himself
as he thought he could get away with.
On
arriving at Frank and Jane’s, we met loads of other club members and were
confronted by a magnificent spread. The effort put into it was certainly
appreciated by all.
There
was a lot to see in the two garages with various beautiful old cars to look at.
The collection
held and an auction of a VERY large bottle of bubbly donated by Ray and Marilyn
raised a total of £300.50. This was split between two charities.
The whole day was great and our thanks must
go to Frank and Jane and their army of helpers.
