Pictures by Ray and Ros
The great God, Mazda shone on Bob and Ros again for this well planned out and almost perfectly executed run through beautiful South Pembrokeshire. Eight cars met up at Pont Abraham Services at the far Western end of the M4 for a 10:15 start. It was great to see Maureen and Bram for the first half of the day, and all the "regulars".
Unfortunately, due to problems with their European copy's engine management system devouring fuses, Ray and Marilyn eventually left the services with the help of a recovery vehicle. Let's hope they get it sorted soon. Their day got even worse when Marilyn fell getting out of the recovery truck and ended up in A&E with a broken ankle.
Just
as we were leaving, there was an odd incident when a Skoda driver (well it would
be), cut me up in the car park!!
The first part of the drive was a "just legal" sweep along the A48/A40 to St. Clears before we got onto the more pleasant "A" roads towards our first stop at Carew Castle.
This
is a beautiful spot with the castle and a tidal mill and it gave some of us a
chance to get a cup of coffee and a walk whilst others looked at how shiny
Ceri's wheel was (he assured me he's going to clean the other three up before
the Swansea Classic Car show next Monday).
Leaving Carew, we headed West towards lunch at Pembroke for some very spirited driving through the lanes, then on to St. Govan's for lunch. Very near here is St. Govan's chapel built into the cliff face which some of the group walked down to take a look at. Michelle and I decided to stay up on the cliff-tops to look at the magnificent brooding scenery.
Just
before lunch, we took another walk down to some lily gardens near the pub. There
weren't many lilies in evidence today as it's a little early in the year, but
it's certainly a place for the note book for Summer time. The lunch in the St.
Govan's arms was very impressive and superb value for money; the vegetarian meal
was one of the best I've ever tasted!
We had to stop for the obligatory group of cars shot. If
you look carefully, you can see Ceri inspecting the damage after I scraped our
newly painted front spoiler on the way into the lay-by.
We made another attempt at visiting the museum of speed at Pendine Beach (see West Wales run 2001). This time, the museum was open, but the record breaking car "Babs" wasn't there! Apparently, she's only in residence in July and August. Ah well, maybe next year...
Following the coast, we got to the spiritual home of Dylan Thomas, Laugharne for the now-customary ice-cream. By this time, Clive & Penny, Dennis & Jennifer and Maureen & Bram had "peeled off" for home, but we still made quite an impression with the local kids (well it's a quiet town). Ros bribed them with biscuits to keep them away from her beloved Poppy, but Ceri and Lyndsey happily opened their doors to them. They were a nice bunch of kids and were just very enthusiastic about the cars.
We
posed for a final group photo on the bridge near Laugharne Castle while Bob had
another Coffee and Cigarette break before all heading for home.
It was another great day out with some great twisty bits which we took at speed. Top marks to Ros and Bob for organising it (even if we did take a few wrong turns). If you didn't get a chance to make it but like the sound of the drive, the route will be posted in the "routes" section of this website.
